“Dragoş Vodă” reservation of aurochses

“Dragoş Vodă” reservation is one of the largest in Europe, with a surface of 11.500 hectares. The reservation was founded in 1968 and lies in the North of the county, in the commune of Vânători in Neamţ, in the vicinity of Neamț Monastery.
In accordance with the chronicle of the Forestry in Tîrgu Neamţ, the first three specimens, Rarău, Roxana and Raluca, were brought from Poland in 1970.
Among the 28 existing aurochses in Vânători-Neamţ, six speciments could be admired at “Dragoş Vodă” reservation of aurochses.
The remainder of the aurochses are in the acclimatization park which a closed surface of 180 hectares.

Aurochses have been transferred between reservations over the years.
In 1982, the aurochses Medalist, Mentol, Metocika, Meringhia and Robu were transferred to the Reservation of aurochses Bucşani-Neagra and at “Dragoş Vodă” remained the aurochs Rarău and the female aurochs Ravena.
In 1998, from the same reservation were brought three aurochses, Rodion, Rochiţa and Rodia. In 2009, other four female aurochses were brought from Sweden.
Besides the specimens of aurochses, the reservation also includes specimens of Carpathian deer, fallow deer, roebucks, foxes, bears, wolves and species of birds. In the reservation, there are also some ponds, especially equipped for fishing, with specimens of carp, gold fish, pike perch, pike or perch.
